From MIC College Kanchikacherla to University of Central Missouri — Niharika’s US Journey

📅 June 8, 2026   |   ✍️ Study2Migrate Vijayawada   |   🕐 5 min read

Niharika Mannepalli is from Kanchikacherla — a small town in Krishna district, about 45 kilometres from Vijayawada. She studied at MIC College of Technology, one of the respected engineering colleges in the area. When she decided she wanted to pursue a Master’s in the USA, her first concern wasn’t IELTS or the GRE.

It was this: “Will US universities take a student from a college like mine seriously?”

She joined University of Central Missouri with an F1 visa. Here is her story — and what it means for every student from a smaller college in Krishna district, Guntur, or anywhere in the region.

MIC College of Technology — and US University Admissions

MIC College of Technology (Manipal Institute of Commerce, Kanchikacherla) is affiliated to JNTUK and offers engineering programmes in Computer Science, Electronics, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering. Like many colleges in the Krishna-Guntur corridor, it produces graduates who are academically capable but underestimate their chances abroad.

The reality: US universities evaluate your individual GRE score, IELTS score, academic performance, and SOP — not your college’s brand name. Niharika’s profile from MIC was competitive. It just needed to be packaged correctly.

The Starting Point — Kanchikacherla to Vijayawada

Niharika’s journey started at our office on MG Road, Kanuru, Vijayawada — a 45-minute drive from Kanchikacherla. She came with her academic transcripts, a rough idea of which course she wanted (Computer Science or Information Technology), and a determination to make it work.

Her profile at the first consultation:

  • CGPA: 7.6 from MIC College of Technology, Kanchikacherla
  • Branch: Computer Science Engineering
  • No GRE score yet
  • No work experience
  • Target: Master’s in Computer Science or IT in the USA
  • Budget: ₹35–40 lakhs (education loan possible)

Step 1 — GRE and IELTS

Niharika prepared for GRE while attending our coaching sessions in Vijayawada. The commute from Kanchikacherla wasn’t easy — she came three times a week for in-person sessions and supplemented with online resources.

Her results:

  • GRE: 309 (Quant 158, Verbal 151)
  • IELTS: 6.5 overall

A GRE of 309 with a 7.6 CGPA from a JNTUK-affiliated college positioned Niharika well for mid-tier US universities — including several with strong CS programmes and high Indian student populations.

Step 2 — University Shortlisting

For Niharika’s profile, we recommended universities that value academic consistency over college pedigree:

  • University of Central Missouri (UCM) — first choice, strong CS programme, established Indian student community, affordable fees
  • Lamar University — backup option
  • Pittsburg State University — safe option

University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Missouri is particularly well-suited to profiles like Niharika’s. It has a strong Computer Science department, a large and established Indian student community, and a track record of issuing I-20s to graduates from JNTUK-affiliated colleges across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

UCM issued Niharika an unconditional offer within three weeks of application.

Step 3 — Education Loan from Kanchikacherla

One of the practical challenges for students from smaller towns is the education loan process. Banks and NBFCs require thorough documentation — income proof, property documents, ITRs — and families in smaller towns sometimes find this process confusing.

Niharika’s family owned property in Kanchikacherla which was used as collateral. We guided them through a comparison of HDFC Credila, Avanse, and SBI — and they secured a loan of ₹36 lakhs through Avanse, covering tuition plus living costs for the first year.

For students from Krishna district considering an education loan for studying abroad, collateral-backed loans through NBFCs are often the fastest route, especially when CIBIL scores are a concern.

Step 4 — F1 Visa Interview

Niharika attended the US Consulate in Hyderabad for her F1 visa interview. Before the real interview, she came to our Vijayawada office for our free F1 visa mock interview.

The real interview was four minutes. The officer asked three questions: why UCM, what does your father do, and how are you funding your education. Her loan documentation was clear and her answers were confident. Visa approved.

“I was really nervous because I thought the officer would ask something about my college. He didn’t. He just wanted to know about the money and my plans.” — Niharika Mannepalli, MIC College 2024 graduate
