Pranitha Kolli was in her final year at Velagapudi Ramakrishna Siddhartha Engineering College (VRSEC) in Vijayawada when she decided the USA was where she wanted to do her Master’s. She had a strong academic record, a clear target course — Computer Science — and a family willing to support the investment. What she didn’t have was a GRE score, an IELTS score, or any idea of where to start.
A year later, Pranitha was holding an F1 visa and preparing to join Webster University in the United States.
Here is exactly how she got there — and what every VRSEC graduate considering the USA should know.
Why VRSEC Graduates Are Well-Positioned for US Universities
VRSEC — formally the Velagapudi Ramakrishna Siddhartha Engineering College — is one of the most respected autonomous engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh. Its graduates consistently secure admissions to US universities across Computer Science, Electronics, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering programmes.
US universities look favourably at VRSEC profiles because the institution has a strong academic track record and its graduates tend to perform well in standardised tests. For Pranitha, her VRSEC degree in Computer Science Engineering was a solid foundation for a US Master’s application.
Step 1 — GRE and IELTS Preparation
The USA requires two scores for most Master’s programmes: GRE (for academic aptitude) and IELTS or TOEFL (for English proficiency).
Pranitha joined our GRE coaching programme in Vijayawada and prepared over three months. Her final GRE score of 312 (Quant 163, Verbal 149) was competitive for mid-tier US universities. She also prepared for IELTS alongside — scoring 6.5 overall, which satisfied the English proficiency requirement at Webster University and her other shortlisted universities.
One thing Pranitha did right: she didn’t wait for her GRE score before starting university research. Both processes ran in parallel, saving two months.
Step 2 — University Shortlisting for a VRSEC CS Graduate
With a GRE of 312 and a CGPA of 7.8 from VRSEC, we shortlisted universities across three tiers:
- Reach: University of Texas at Arlington, George Mason University
- Match: Webster University, University of Central Missouri
- Safe: Westcliff University, California Intercontinental University
Webster University offered Pranitha admission with a partial scholarship — reducing her annual tuition by $4,000. She accepted Webster as her first choice.
Step 3 — SOP, LOR, and Application Documents
US university applications are more document-intensive than UK applications. Pranitha needed:
- Statement of Purpose (SOP) — a 1,000-word essay explaining her academic background, career goals, and why she chose the specific programme
- 3 Letters of Recommendation (LOR) — from two VRSEC faculty members and one from her internship supervisor
- Transcripts — all semester marksheets, sealed and attested
- Resume / CV — academic and project experience highlighted
We helped Pranitha structure her SOP to highlight her final year project and internship at a Vijayawada-based software firm — both relevant to her target programme. The SOP was the most important document in her application and took three drafts to get right.
Step 4 — I-20 and F1 Visa Application
Once Webster confirmed Pranitha’s admission, they issued her I-20 — the document that authorises a student to apply for an F1 visa.
The F1 visa process involves:
- Pay SEVIS fee ($350) — mandatory before booking the visa appointment
- Complete DS-160 form online
- Book visa appointment at the US Consulate in Hyderabad
- Attend the interview
The F1 visa interview at the Hyderabad consulate is where most students get nervous — and where preparation makes the difference. Pranitha attended our free F1 visa mock interview session at our Vijayawada office before her actual interview.
Pranitha’s actual visa interview lasted under 4 minutes. The officer asked three questions: why Webster, how are you funding your education, and what will you do after graduation. She answered all three confidently and received her visa on the spot.
The F1 Visa Interview — What VRSEC Students Ask Most
The most common question we hear from VRSEC students before their visa interview: “Will they ask about my GRE score?”
Rarely. Visa officers are not assessing your academic merit — that’s the university’s job. They are assessing three things:
- Are you a genuine student (not an immigration risk)?
- Do you have the funds to support your education?
- Do you intend to return to India after graduation?
For Pranitha, the funding was the critical question — and the education loan documentation from HDFC Credila answered it clearly.
