UK Student Visa Requirements 2026 — Complete Guide for Indian Students

📅 May 25, 2026   |   ✍️ Study2Migrate Vijayawada   |   🕐 10 min read

Every year, hundreds of students from Vijayawada and Andhra Pradesh land their UK university offers — and then lose weeks to confusion about what the visa actually requires.

The UK Student visa (formerly Tier 4) is not complicated once you understand the structure. But it has specific requirements around documents, finances, and timing that catch Indian applicants off guard if they are not prepared in advance.

This is the complete, updated guide for 2026 — written from the experience of having processed hundreds of successful UK student visa applications from our Vijayawada office.

What is the UK Student Visa (Student Route)?

The UK Student visa — officially called the Student Route — allows international students to study at a UK university for the duration of their course, plus an additional period after graduation (the Graduate Route, commonly called the Post-Study Work visa).

For Indian students, the Student Route visa is applied for online at gov.uk/student-visa and processed through VFS Global in Hyderabad or other Indian cities.

Key facts for 2026:

  • Application fee: £490 (paid online at time of application)
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £776 per year of your course
  • Processing time from India: typically 3–5 weeks from biometrics date
  • Earliest you can apply: 6 months before your course start date
  • You cannot apply earlier than 6 months — applications submitted too early are rejected

Step 1 — Get Your CAS First

Before you can apply for the UK Student visa, your university must issue you a CAS — Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. This is a unique 14-character reference number that ties your visa application to your specific university place.

You cannot apply for the visa without a CAS. Universities issue CAS approximately 6 weeks before your course start date — typically June or July for September intake students.

The CAS contains your course details, fees, and the conditions your university has set. Check it carefully when it arrives — any errors in your name or course details need to be corrected before you submit the visa application.

Complete Document Checklist — UK Student Visa 2026

These are the documents you need to apply. Read each point carefully — small errors here cause delays or refusals.

Identity Documents

  • Valid passport — must be valid beyond your expected course end date. If your passport expires during your course, renew it before applying. Your name on the visa application must match your passport exactly.
  • Previous passports — if you have old passports with previous UK visas, travel stamps, or refusals, include them. UKVI wants to see your full travel history.

CAS and Course Documents

  • CAS reference number — you enter this in the online application form. Keep the CAS letter from your university accessible.
  • Unconditional offer letter — confirms all conditions have been met. If you still have a conditional offer, you cannot apply yet.
  • Course fee payment receipt — the deposit you paid to confirm your place (typically £1,000–£2,500). UKVI checks that you are genuinely committed to the course.

Financial Documents — Most Common Reason for Refusal

This is where most Indian applicants make mistakes. UKVI requires you to prove you have enough funds to cover:

  • Your first year tuition fees (as stated on your CAS)
  • Living costs — currently set at £1,334 per month for students studying outside London, for 9 months = £12,006

So your total financial requirement = tuition fee (from CAS) + £12,006 living costs.

How to show funds:

  • Bank statements — showing the required amount held continuously for 28 days before the date of application. The 28-day period ends no more than 31 days before you submit. The balance must not fall below the required amount on any single day during those 28 days.
  • Education loan sanction letter — from a recognised Indian bank (SBI, HDFC Credila, Axis, Avanse, Auxilo, InCred). The sanctioned amount must cover the required total. The letter must clearly state the sanctioned amount in GBP or INR equivalent.
  • Combination — bank statements plus partial loan sanction letter together covering the required amount.

Critical: Start your education loan process at least 6–8 weeks before you plan to apply for the visa. Loan processing takes time — students who start late miss their visa window. If you need guidance on education loans, read our education loan guide.

Academic Qualifications

  • All semester transcripts — official copies with university stamp and signature
  • Degree certificate or provisional certificate (if final year not complete at time of application)
  • Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets

English Language Evidence

  • IELTS score card — or PTE Academic score. Your university’s CAS already confirms your English meets their requirement, so UKVI typically accepts the CAS as sufficient. However, keep your original score card accessible.
  • If your medium of instruction was English throughout your education, some applicants qualify for an English language exemption — confirm with your university.

Tuberculosis (TB) Test Certificate

This is mandatory for Indian applicants applying for a UK visa for a course longer than 6 months. Many students are not aware of this requirement until late.

  • Must be done at a UKVI-approved TB testing centre
  • In Hyderabad: BLDE Hospital (approved centre) — book an appointment at least a week before your VFS biometrics date
  • Test takes 1–2 days and the certificate is valid for 6 months
  • Cost: approximately ₹3,500–₹4,500

Photograph

  • Passport-size photograph meeting UKVI specifications — white background, no glasses, taken within the last 6 months
  • Exact specifications are on the gov.uk website. Have your photographer follow them precisely — wrong photos cause rejection at VFS.

Parent/Sponsor Financial Documents (if funds are in parents’ accounts)

  • 28-day bank statements in parent’s name
  • Proof of relationship (birth certificate)
  • Letter from parent confirming they are sponsoring your education
  • Parent’s income proof — salary slips, IT returns, or bank statements showing regular income

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1 — Complete the Online Application

Go to gov.uk/student-visa. You will need your CAS reference number, passport details, and financial information. The form takes approximately 45–60 minutes. Pay the application fee (£490) and IHS online at this stage.

Step 2 — Book Your TB Test

Book your TB test at the BLDE centre in Hyderabad immediately after completing the online form. Do not wait — appointments fill up. The test result needs to be ready before your VFS appointment.

Step 3 — Book Your VFS Biometrics Appointment

After completing the online application, you book a biometrics appointment at VFS Global, Hyderabad. At the appointment you will give your fingerprints and submit your documents. The appointment takes approximately 1.5–2 hours. Vijayawada students travel to Hyderabad for this — plan your travel in advance as VFS appointment slots fill up 2–3 weeks ahead.

Step 4 — Attend Your VFS Appointment

Carry all original documents plus one set of photocopies. Dress formally. Your biometric data is taken, documents are submitted, and your passport is retained for visa processing.

Step 5 — Wait for the Decision

Processing time from India is typically 3–5 weeks from your biometrics date. You receive a decision by email and your passport is returned either to VFS for collection or by courier (if you opted for courier return).

What Your Visa Will Show

Your visa comes as a vignette sticker in your passport — this is entry clearance valid for a short window to travel to the UK. It is NOT your full visa.

Once you arrive in the UK, you collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from a designated post office within 10 days of arrival. Your BRP is your actual visa document for the duration of your course. Do not lose it.

Common Reasons UK Student Visas Are Refused

In our experience processing hundreds of applications, these are the most frequent causes of refusal for Indian students:

  • Financial documents do not meet the 28-day rule — balance dropped below the required amount on even one day, or the 28-day period was not calculated correctly
  • Loan sanction letter does not clearly cover the required amount — the letter must explicitly state the amount in a way UKVI can verify against your CAS
  • Name mismatch between passport and application — even a small discrepancy (middle name included in one place, absent in another) causes problems
  • TB test certificate missing or from unapproved centre — always use the UKVI-approved centre
  • Conditional offer not converted to unconditional before applying — do not apply until you have an unconditional offer
  • Applied too early — applications submitted more than 6 months before course start are rejected

A refusal is not permanent. Once the specific issue is resolved you can reapply. If you receive a refusal letter, bring it to our office in Kanuru — we will review it and advise on reapplication.

UK Graduate Route — Post-Study Work Visa

One of the biggest reasons students choose the UK is the Graduate Route visa — a post-study work permit that allows you to stay in the UK after completing your degree:

  • 2 years for Bachelor’s and Master’s degree graduates
  • 3 years for PhD graduates
  • No job offer required — you can work in any role, for any employer
  • Applied for from inside the UK before your Student visa expires

This is the pathway many Vijayawada students use to gain UK work experience and build their profile for future settlement options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work on a UK Student visa?

Yes. Most students on the Student Route can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official vacation periods. Check your CAS and offer letter — some courses have restrictions.

Can I bring my family to the UK on a student visa?

Postgraduate students on government-sponsored scholarships or research programmes can bring dependants. Most taught Master’s students cannot bring dependants under current 2026 rules. Check the latest UKVI guidance for your specific situation.

What if my IELTS score is below the university requirement?

You will not receive an unconditional offer without meeting the English language requirement. If your score is close, a score improvement preparation with targeted coaching is the fastest route to meeting the requirement.

How long before my course can I arrive in the UK?

Your Student visa allows you to enter the UK up to 1 month before your course start date for courses longer than 6 months. Plan to arrive at least a week before your induction date to settle in.

Is the TB test required every time I apply?

Yes, for every new Student visa application from India where the course is longer than 6 months. The certificate is valid for 6 months from the test date.

What happens if my visa is refused?

You receive a refusal letter with specific reasons. Most refusals for Indian students are for financial documentation. You can reapply once the issue is resolved. Come to our Vijayawada office — we review refusal letters and advise on reapplication at no charge.

How much does a UK student visa cost in total?

Application fee £490 + IHS (£776 per year of your course) + TB test (approx ₹4,000) + VFS service fee (approx ₹2,500). For a 1-year Master’s programme, total visa-related costs are approximately £1,300–£1,400 (₹1.4–1.5 lakh).

The UK Student visa process is manageable when you know what is required and prepare in advance. The students who face delays or refusals are almost always those who started the financial documentation too late or made a correctable error that could have been caught before submission.
